1% for the Planet

Our Environmental Impact

Environmental sustainability is engrained in our mission and in the nature of our work. With our two key programs, we turn gently used clothing donations into confidence and relief for children in need.

Our services meet the basic needs of future generations while mitigating the detrimental impact that discarded clothing has on the environment and the health of our planet. By choosing to donate like-new clothing to Catie’s Closet, you strengthen our community and promote a healthy environment.

Clothing you no longer wear can wear away the health of our planet.

It can take over 200 years for an item of clothing to completely decompose in a landfill. In that process, greenhouse methane gasses and toxic chemicals are released into the air and soil.

Donating clothes promotes environmental sustainability.

Ninety-five percent of textiles can be recycled or reused, keeping them out of landfills or from being incinerated. Giving your clothing new life instead of throwing it away can have a huge impact on your personal carbon footprint and on the overall health of our Earth. When you donate your clothes, your once-loved clothing can keep someone else warm, comfortable and confident.

85% of textiles end up in landfills each year.

Earth Breeze

Earth Breeze

Laundry detergent is one of the most common requests we receive from homeless shelters and outreach programs, veterans services, women’s shelters, animal care shelters, and disaster relief services.  Because of our wonderful partnership with Earth Breeze, laundry detergent is available in 105 of our Closets, offering students a simpler solution for washing clothing, regardless of their access to a washing machine. Every package of Earth Breeze detergent sheets helps save water and reduce unnecessary waste. For every package of Earth Breeze Eco Sheets™ sold, they donate ten loads of laundry detergent to organization that serve individuals  in need through their Buy One, Give Ten program. We are a proud recipient of this program. Click here to visit Earth Breeze to Buy One & Give Ten!
