Support from our community members and local businesses are pillars to Catie’s Closet’s work. We are thrilled to share a recent Q&A Spotlight with our long-time and passionate supporter, Kara Foti from Karascene.
Karascene participated in our ninth annual Fill the Bus initiative and collected 31 bags of clothes and shoes, new undergarments, dozens of toiletries, and boxes and bags filled with school supplies. All of these donations will help children in need show up and shine as they go back to school. Thank you to Karascene and everyone who donated to make this immensely successful!
Q: Tell us about Karascene.
A: Karascene was created from a childhood dream that I had of opening a store in my hometown filled with beautiful things for gifts & your home. The goal was to put a smile on patrons’ faces, bring the community together with workshops, and help support other local individuals & businesses. I opened my doors on March 8th, 2019, which also happened to be International Women’s Day.
Q: How long has your business supported Catie’s Closet and in what ways?
A: I reached out to Catie’s Closet before my doors even opened to ask how I could become involved & support this AMAZING organization. I’ve been open for 5 1/2 years now, and I’ve held at least 2 drives a year. Typically spring & fall. I share when they post urgently needed items, took a tour of the distribution center, and talk about it with my customers.
Q: Why did you decide to participate in Fill the Bus this year?
A: I participate in this every year because no student should start the school year without the essentials needed to learn & feel their best!
Q: There are so many worthy non-profit organizations in our area. Why do you choose to continue supporting Catie’s Closet?
A: While it’s true that there are many, this one in particular is near and dear to me because it helps children and young adults. Internal thoughts of one’s self worth, confidence, etc. is developed at a very young age, and EVERY child SHOULD have what they need to look & more importantly FEEL their very best! When a child isn’t worried about clean clothes, hair care, period products, etc., they can focus on their education and building friendships.
Q: How does your partnership with Catie’s Closet spark community engagement and help you achieve your own mission?
A: My friends, family, and customers get excited when I announce a drive! I find that most people innately want to help and give to others, but aren’t sure of the best ways to help. Catie’s Closet not only allows families to help, but also allows them to purge still good useable clothing, to help those in need. It’s an win win and they can make a BIG positive impact for kids & the environment, without having to spend any money.
Q: How would you encourage other businesses to get involved?
A: I want every business out there to know, big or small, that it’s so easy to get involved, make a real difference, and help change the lives of young children & adults. All you need is an open heart, space to collect for a drive, passion to do something wonderful, and the best part is none of this has to cost you a dime.
There are other ways to help as well, such as sharing posts, shopping their wishlist, doing a 5K, spreading the word, volunteering at the distribution center, etc. Sometimes it’s just about connections you may have as well. Maybe you know someone that is an extreme coupon person and has some toiletries to donate, you work for a company that will match your donation so it doubles, maybe you see a clearance deal online and share it with others. Have rewards cash at a store? Perhaps once you can use them to make a purchase to help.
I heard this quote once, and it stuck with me,
“The answer will always be NO if you don’t ask the question.”
So ask others if they have donations, want to help, can match you, etc.
AMAZING things happen when people work together!
